With motherhood comes new responsibilities and challenges. Colic is common in infants, and it was a nightmarish experience to see my child crying continuously, with no sign of stopping. However, there are ways to soothe your baby.
New mothers first need to know what the symptoms of colic are.
- The baby refuses to drink milk
- The baby cries constantly
- The baby throws his legs upward
- The baby has a bloated tummy
Though the doctor could prescribe medicines for colic, I preferred using some tried and tested home remedies, which worked wonders in pacifying my little one. Here are some home remedies that worked for me.
1) Ajwain (Carom)
For infants, put a few ajwain seeds in a cotton cloth and tie it tightly. Warm a tawa and place the cloth bag on it. Once the cloth bag is warm, keep it on your infant’s tummy. Make sure to check the heat of the cloth bag, on your hand, before you place it on your baby. For toddlers, you can give them ajwain water. Boil half cup of water with one teaspoon of ajwain. Let it cool down to a lukewarm temperature.
2) Hing (Asafoetida)
Mix a pinch of asafoetida in water, to make a paste, and gently massage your baby’s navel and surrounding areas.
3) Jeera (Cumin)
Breastfeeding mothers can add jeera in their food and toddlers can be given jeera water or some extra jeera in food.
4) Saunf (Fennel Seeds)
Boil one spoon of fennel seeds in half a cup of water, and bring it to room temperature. Give this to your toddler, and it will do wonders. Breastfeeding mothers can drink it as well.
A daily massage with some exercises is very important. It not only helps in strengthening the bond between the mother and baby, but also strengthens the baby’s bones, relaxes his muscles, and releases any gas, so the baby can sleep well. Use this massage and exercise technique:
A)Gently push the tummy area from top to bottom, using your palms.
B)Hold up both the legs of the baby.
C)Bend the knees and bring them towards the baby’s tummy. Hold for a few seconds, and release.
